Dr. Harlow's Experience in Africa
Kansas State University: While faculty at KSU, one of my research areas was the education of newcomer students in American schools. After teaching school short term in 3 countries five times and having taught refugee students, I brought important professional and life experience to developing a useful tool for American teachers, and for teachers all over the world, to use as a resource for growth.
With over 1700 educators and trauma professionals attending the 2020 Atlanta Conference, we had a packed room for our session on the newcomer book and film. This is the largest trauma in education conference in the world. Presenters were: Principal Stephanie Wasko from Wichita USD in Kansas and an important contributor to our film; Jessica Mow, ESOL Program & Newcomer Program School Coordinator, Wichita USD, Wichita, Kansas and who is in both the film and contributed a chapter to the book; Diana Delbecchi, Community Resource Coordinator, Green Bay Public Schools, Wisconsin; Dr. Judy Hughey who was Associate Professor of Counselor Education and School Counseling, Kansas State University College of Education; and Dr. Harlow, Art Education Program Coordinator and Teaching Professor, Kansas State University College of Education. The book has a large arts focus and the film also addresses the use of art with traumatized students.
